Sao Paulo, Brazil (AHN) – It was a great day for Red Bull while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso failed to wrap up the drivers’ title Sunday in the second-to-last race of the season in Brazil.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finished 1-2 in the Brazilian Grand Prix Sunday, setting up a showdown for the Formula One title next weekend at the season finale in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Vettel, who sits third in the points, gained the lead in the first corner and cruised to victory ahead of Webber and Alonso, who finished third, while Lewis Hamilton ran fourth.
Racing on the 2.6-mile Interlagos grid, Red Bull scored its first constructors’ championship, while Alonso (246) takes an 8-point lead into the season finale over Webber (238), while Vettel has 231 points and Hamilton has 222 points.
With a second-place finish in Abu Dhabi, Alonso will clinch his third F1 title. Defending champion Jenson Button, who was nearly robbed by armed men outside the track the night before, finished fifth and was mathematically eliminated from the title hunt.
Vettel, who scored his fourth win of the season, won the race by 4.2 seconds ahead of Webber and 6.8 in front of Alonso. Hamilton was 14.6 back.
Felipe Massa, a two-time winner in front of his home crowd in Brazil, had problems on pit lane and finished15th.
