Charlotte, NC, United States (AHN Sports) – What’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owner and driver Robby Gordon doing over the holiday season? How about preparing and shipping a pair of Hummers to South America for the upcoming Dakar Rally off-road race.

That’s right, Gordon is preparing for his sixth try at the “world’s toughest race’ after finishing eighth overall in the event last season.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my guys for the effort and dedication they put into the preparation of the vehicles for the rally this year,” said Gordon. “Being prepared is half the battle.”

In preparation for the event, the first shipment of equipment, including support vehicles, left the Charlotte-based shop on November 5. Freightliner support vehicles were outfitted with supplies, car parts, and equipment necessary to run the 15-day event.

They were transported to Jacksonville, Fla., where they were loaded onto ocean container ships. The vehicles then made an over 5,000-mile journey to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they will undergo final alterations by the team.

In mid-December, the cars were loaded in a transporter and made their way to Miami, where they are shipped via airfreight to South America.

Gordon will be a driver in one of the team’s two entries and this year’s event starts on New Years Day ending 16 days later. Ahead for the Hummers will be dirt roads, rocky mountains and seemingly endless sand dunes that take their toll on the vehicles.

“Proper preparation for the Dakar Rally is the first step toward an overall victory. It entails many long days at the race shop making sure every single part of the race cars are perfect,” said shop manager, Johnny Kaiser.
