Tehran, Iran (AHN) – Iran’s interior government minister is blaming the U.S.’s Central Intelligence Agency and Israel’s Mossad for attacks on prominent Iranian nuclear scientists that left one dead and another seriously injured.
Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, Iran’s interior government minister, was quick to accuse the intelligence agencies as being behind the two separate attacks in northern Iran of two of its prominent nuclear scientists: Dr. Majid Shahriari and Dr. Fereydoon Abbasi, members of the Iran Nuclear Association.
According to Tehran Police Chief Commander, Hossein Sajedi Nia, both incidents were carried out by motorcycle riders who attached bombs to the cars of both scientists who were on their way to work. The bombs exploded a few seconds later, killing Dr. Shahriari but only injuring Dr. Abbasi. The wives of both scientists were also on board but were only injured.
Najjar was quoted on the website of Iran state television IRIB as saying: “Mossad and the CIA are the enemies of Iranians and always seek to hurt this nation. They particularly want to stop our scientific progress. The desperate terrorist act against the two academics shows their weakness and inferiority.”
He failed however, to cite any police report on the matter. The attackers have not yet been identified or arrested by Tehran police.
According to media reports, Shahriari was a member of the nuclear engineering department of Shahid Beheshti University in northern Tehran, while Abbasi held a doctorate in nuclear physics and did nuclear research at the defense ministry.
The attacks came a day after the top U..S military officer said the United States was considering military action as a response to Iran’s recent announcement that its Bushehr nuclear power plant was now operational. Due to Iran’s previous prohibition on international examination of its nuclear program, the U.S. has been suspicious of Iran’s nuclear ambitions as really intended for military and not civilian applications.
