Boatloads of cash: Alameda views seas of opportunity at next America’s Cup

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – With the America’s Cup being hosted in the United States for the first time in 18 years, Alameda is hoping to play a supporting role as San Francisco hosts the international yachting competition in 2013.

In it’s supporting bid, Alameda may reap some of the economic benefits of the 2013 race.

According to reported independent studies, the America’s Cup ranks behind the Olympic Games and soccer’s World Cup in sports in impacting the economies of host countries.

The 34th edition of the America’s Cup is projected to pump an estimated $1.4 billion dollars into the San Francisco region.

Apart from a deep water port, Alameda also offers a thriving marine industry and acres of vacant waterfront property at Alameda Point.

Its marine community is ideal for racing syndicates seeking private locations to stash their boats or test out their boats in the early stages of the race.

It will mark the first time since 1995 that the United States will host the prestigious racing event.
